Happiness is in little things

We often tend to wait for or focus on big life events, such as weddings, births, birthdays, graduations, first homes or job promotions. But life is really made of small moments, intertwined into a greater whole. Don’t miss them. Don’t take them for granted. Don’t forget to appreciate them, because learning to enjoy the little things in life will have a big impact.

American writer Kurt Vonnegut once said, “Enjoy the little things in life because one day you’ll look back and realize they were big things.” So how can you start enjoying the small things – at the time they happen, and not when they had already passed? Take little steps (pun intended).

Step 1: Find what makes you happy and do it often

Happiness means something different to everybody. Find what it is that makes your heart skip a beat and include it into your daily life – as often as possible. Go out for dinner, take a walk in nature, read a book, listen to music, take a relaxing bath or rediscover your childhood love for painting. Whatever it will be, choosing to do what makes you happy will build your confidence and your sense of self-worth.

Step 2: See the world through the eyes of a child

Children are probably the greatest teachers when it comes to enjoying the little things and living in the present moment. If you have them, simply learn from them. If you don’t, no problem … just remember how you used to marvel at the world as a tiny human. Build a sandcastle. Jump in the rain puddles. Walk barefoot. Build a tent with blankets in your living room and read a book with a flashlight. Eat ice-cream for breakfast and cookies for dinner.

Step 3: Keep a gratitude journal

Yesterday is gone, tomorrow is a mystery and today will be over before you know it. Sometimes, the moments of joy can be overlooked, but if you start writing a gratitude journal each night before bed, you’ll start to notice that all the little things that made you happy during the day. And in time, you will see that beautiful things actually happen all the time when you are mindful of them and when you start focusing on the positive. Did your child draw you a beautiful painting in kindergarten? Did a a butterfly land on your windshield on your way to work? Did you have a good laugh while having coffee with your friend?

We hope you are happy when you get that promotion. Or when you make more money. Or when you find the love of your life. Or when you purchase your dream house. But why wait to be happy when you can start being happy right now? Start enjoying all the little things that give you joy and little by little you will see that happiness is always around you.
