Most of the (prepared) food had to be eaten immediately. In case people wanted to preserve some food for a long(er) time, they had to dry it, smoke it, put it in jars or cans, or simply make jam from it. All in all, refrigerators and freezer chests were simply not known to people for a long time. And even when they heard of them, they could not afford these modern ice closets.<\/p>\n
Inbetween, the ice cube making businesses emerged. People bought large (mainly imported) pieces of ice from traders, which were then put into a chest, a kind of ancestor of today’s freezer, and they also stored food alongside.
