Most kids love to cook: it\u2019s hands on, it\u2019s messy, and there\u2019s plenty of room for creativity, not to mention a sense of achievement at the end.\u00a0 It is fun!<\/p>\n

1. Take your time
\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Expect everything to take\u00a0longer than it usually would. So set aside extra time for cooking and keep in mind, particularly for younger children, that the journey is as much fun as the destination!<\/p>\n

2. Plan ahead
\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Select an appropriate recipe, one that they\u2019ll enjoy and that involves plenty of tasks suited to their age. Make sure you have all the ingredients and equipment at the ready. If necessary, do some\u00a0pre-preparation\u00a0before you ask them to join in.<\/p>\n

3. Make a mini-cooking station<\/h2>\n

Seat them at the table or counter, away from the heat, so you can whip up dinner with minimal interference.
\nGive the kids a step stool for a good view, and give them their own dedicated space at the counter free of glassware, eggs, meat, fish, and sharp tools (including peelers and micro\u00acplane graters!). They\u2019ll feel more in control and involved. And\u00a0keep them busy with the safe stuff\u00a0to keep them from grabbing your chef\u2019s knife or raw chicken out of boredom.<\/p>\n

4. Let the mess happen<\/h2>\n

Cooking is a\u00a0messy business\u00a0\u2013 and when kids are involved there\u2019ll be even more. Exercise a bit of damage control by putting a plastic tablecloth down on the floor or a tray underneath their work station. But ultimately you\u2019ll all have more fun if you just relax and then clean up together at the end. Enlisting kids in the cleanup will make the experience more pleasant for everyone \u2014 and teach them another essential life skill.<\/p>\n

5. Talk much<\/h2>\n

As you\u2019re cooking, talk about the\u00a0ingredients and their origin, about cooking processes and techniques. Be honest. Beef is from a cow. Pork is from a pig. Apples are ready in the fall. And do not forget about the hygiene: Ensure they\u00a0wash their hands\u00a0beforehand and between touching raw and cooked or ready-to-eat foods.<\/p>\n

6. Don\u2019t go Gordon Ramsey on them<\/h2>\n

Engage the kids\u00a0only as much as they want to be. Stuffing ravioli can be fun for a minute, but after five tries, it might get a bit dull for the little ones. And don\u2019t expect culinary perfection.
\nAccept the fact that not all kids like to cook. Your\u00a0non-cooking kids can still contribute\u00a0to the meal by washing produce, rinsing cans, setting the table, and tasting each dish to determine if it needs additional seasoning.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
